Activities

Boat trip on the Allahein River
The Allahein River, about ½ hour drive from Sunbird House, separates The Gambia from Senegal. Let Amadou paddle you over to Senegal for an overnight stay in a lodge or go for a day trip. It is so peaceful and relaxing and a great visit for bird watching.

Brikama Craft Market
A trip to Brikama Craft Market for carved wooden gifts and lots of other local goods is a must. It's a great experience but we recommend going with a Gambian guide to get the best deals and keep some of the more persistent traders at bay.

Drumming lesson
Buy a drum from Jama at Footsteps, which includes a lesson or just book a session with Jama. I can personally testify that he is very patient and an excellent drummer.

Gambia Reptile Farm
The farm is only a few miles Sunbird House. It is a rescue centre that concentrates on educating children to allay their fears and superstitions about snakes and other animals. They welcome donations from visitors to support their work.

Fishing
Beach casting can result in a lovely fresh dinner or hours of sunbathing on quiet beaches. Either way it's a great way to spend a day. More information on fishing.

Walking
Walk along the beach, stopping at a bar along the way, to Gunjur fishing village and see the colourful pirogues bringing in their catch. Explore the bush by following the shaded paths used by the villagers - great for a gentle stroll during the heat of the day.

Wildlife Watching
The Gambia is well known for the wide variety of beautifully coloured birds. The area around Sunbird House is excellent for bird watching and monkeys, deer and bats can also be spotted. Abuko Nature Reserve is an easy day trip from Sunbird House and for more ticks on the twitchers list you can combine a holiday at Sunbird House with a visit up river visit Hidden Gambia for more information.
