The build

Inspiration
Many people ask us 'Why build a house in Gambia?' There are a number of practical reasons such as the ability to escape the British winter to soak up some sun and the relatively short, cheap flights. However our real inspiration came from the opportunity to build in an area of the world that is relatively unspoilt, where life is still simple and to do it in a way that has minimal impact on the local environment. Finally meeting Len & David inspired us and gave us the confidence to embark on this project.

Ethos
It is really important to us that the house has sound environmental credentials but is still practical and comfortable. We are hoping that Sunbird House will bring some economic benefits to the local area and nearly all the builders are Gambians from the local village, Gunjur.
