People

The Gambians we have met are a very happy people - it is known as the smiling coast. They are not materially wealthy compared to Europeans and the fees for education are quite high.

There are a number of different charities that operate in The Gambia but we have chosen to sponsor the son of Omar, one of the staff at Footsteps. Marie at Footsteps organises the sponsorship and checks that the money is going on schooling. Abdoulie visited us last time we were at Footsteps and told us about his school. He goes to school in the morning then in the afternoon fishes and sells the fish to provide income.

Like most of the boys we have met he supports Man U but cannot afford the 3pence it costs to watch them play. Most villages show the premier matches on satellite TV (about once a week) and it costs about 3p to sit on a bench and watch.
