About Sunbird House

We opened Sunbird House in 2015 to welcome travellers and volunteers in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. After a decade of hosting volunteers through an internationally renowned organization in Moshi, we decided to create Sunbird House to offer a warm and welcoming "home away from home" for anyone visiting Tanzania. We have been working in the community for many years and have extensive ties to volunteering initiatives that work with local women and children. Your stay at Sunbird House will help provide an important source of income for Excel Education Foundation - a local charity that helps support disadvantaged students. We look forward to welcoming you to beautiful and friendly Tanzania and to help you make the most of your trip or volunteer experience!
Sunbird Home is located in the Soweto Area of Moshi, on a quiet and safe street. We offer a free shuttle service for guests, once or twice a day (depending on demand), between Sunbird Home and Moshi town centre. The trip takes 10 minutes and in town you'll find shops, restaurants, ATMs, tour companies, and anything else you might need during your stay. Walking to town from Sunbird Home takes about 30-40 minutes, and about 15 minutes by bicycle. (Although it is not advisable to walk to use a bicycle when it's dark.) A taxi is 5,000 Shilling from the southern parts of Moshi town (e.g. Kindoroko Hotel) and 6,000 Shilling from the northern parts of Moshi town (e.g. Clocktower roundabout). Most taxi drivers know Sunbird House, which was formerly known as Twiga Home.
We can pick you up from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Just send us your flight details.
A minibus (seats 1-7 passengers) is 50 USD* one way.
Sunbird House is accessible by car and we offer protected parking for your car. From the road Dar-es-Salaam/Kenya to Arusha, turn left (coming from Dar/Kenya) or right (coming from Arusha) at Memorial Market and follow the road some 2 km until you see KILI FM on the right side. Just opposite of KILI FM turn left (little bridge, unpaved road) into the residential area and drive some 200 meters until you reach a ground with trees. Turn right and look for the Twiga signboard at our gate.
From Moshi Town centre, follow Market Street out of town direction Soweto. Always follow the paved road, passing VETA (around 1.5 km) and after VETA (around 1 km) turn left into the residential area. Reaching the football ground, look for the Sunbird signboard on our gate.
*USD notes must be printed in 2003 or later. Earlier notes will not be accepted anywhere in Tanzania.

About Moshi/Kilimanjaro

Moshi is a city in Northern Tanzania, located on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Moshi is the departure point for all Kilimanjaro climbs and is also conveniently located to reach all Northern Tanzanian National Parks.
Day trips from Moshi include Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park, a visit to Marangu Chagga Village & Marangu Waterfall, a visit to a Maasai Village, and a visit to a coffee plantation at the lower altitudes of Kilimanjaro.
Safaris that depart from Moshi include Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater & Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park and Lake Eyasi National Park. We can help arrange day trips or safaris, just ask us.
Moshi town is located at an altitude of 813 m (2667') above sea level and throughout the year has a climate which is considered enjoyable by most travellers, with average maximum day temperatures of 27 to 32 degrees Celcius (80-90 F) and minimum night temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees (60-66 F).
The city grew and developed from the 1930s to 1950s through the coffee trade. Coffee plantations tours around Kilimanjaro are a popular attraction and tourists can see the coffee auction at the "Kahawa House." Several of Moshi's old buildings have been recently restored, bringing Moshi's glorious past back to life.
